Arrival Gates: An Overview

The five locations above have been agreed upon by Tower as primary reporting points our training aircraft should use to simplify communications when returning to Cape.
Reporting an accurate position helps any controller safely sequence and separate traffic. This agreement narrows down our possible positions, which both reduces the complexity of our calls and makes it easier for ATC to time our arrivals.
Follow these guidelines to the best of your ability, and don't forget to ask for clarification ("say again!") if you're not sure of any instruction.
General Procedure:
- Obtain latest local weather observation before reaching your arrival gate
- Overfly your selected gate at approx. 2,500' MSL (or as needed)
- Report position: "Cape Tower, [callsign] over [gate] with numbers, [intentions]
- Proceed as instructed
Remember: Expected speed is how you're sequenced, so fly consistent speeds and as directly as possible to your assigned entry.
Airport Area Detail

Local Landmarks:
The area surrounding our home base has a few handy visual references you can use when working in the traffic pattern. This local knowledge should work to enhance your situational awareness, and can augment your visual scan to establish a consistent pattern.
- Three mile hill: Useful for arrivals from the southwest, Tower may also refer to this specific spot on frequency for traffic advisories.
- Kelso Exit: Along I-55, an exit is located conveniently three nautical miles southeast of CGI. This is a common reporting instruction Tower may issue.
- Chaffee: Occasionally used as a holding point for traffic outside the airspace when it gets busy, this town may be called out on frequency for various reasons.
- Scott City: This town may be used by tower during traffic advisories, especially for aircraft on final to runway 28.
Students: Use this same concept of knowing the landmarks surrounding a field for any airport you visit - amplify your ยง 91.103 preparation, and do some research.
Example Arrival: Goose Island

- Overfly the Goose Island Arrival Gate (approx. 2,500' MSL)
- Make your initial call: "Cape Tower, Skyhawk 381J is over Goose Island with numbers, inbound for touch and goes"
- Follow the instructions you're given
A collection of likely pattern entries are depicted with their associated runways in various colors above, but remember to listen for your instructions - ensure you understand the expectations!
If you aren't directly over a gate? That's fine! Tower has agreed that reporting "South of Delta," "two miles east of Benton," "north of Devil's Island," etc are all still aligned with the spirit of these procedures.
Note that all other arrivals will follow the same pattern, so I chose not to draw them in detail.
